When Tragedy Strikes: Preparing For the Unexpected Life Changes

This isn’t a glamorous topic, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. There’s no better time than the present to share a real story about how life insurance saved a child’s life – that child was me

Less than a week ago, I reflected on the 24th anniversary of my mother’s passing. Interestingly enough, she was a Life Insurance Broker as well. Because of this, she realized the importance of putting protections in place for her daughter just in case she were to suddenly pass away. It was in fact sudden – she was tragically murdered and I was only 9-years-old. With the loss of both parents and without any siblings, I was alone.

No one, even in my extended family, was prepared to take care of a 9-year-old girl. Without the ability to earn an income and with my life being flipped upside down overnight, how was I supposed to survive – let alone thrive? The answer: life insurance.

My mother worked so hard and so long that I wasn’t granted many opportunities of quality time with her. She had a plan and that plan was to work hard for a few years, in order to retire early and enjoy all of her time with her daughter. Plans change – her life was out of her control. One of her plans did come to fruition and that was her plan to provide me with some financial security, in order to maintain a particular lifestyle and financial assistance to achieve educational goals. To be honest, life would have been completely different without her plan.

Why am I sharing this story with you now?

As I mentioned September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, and because this topic is near and dear to my heart, I work extra hard to raise awareness about this difficult conversation. Life insurance is so much more than an added cost each month or a lump-sum of money paid-out if you pass away. It means that life can go on for those that you care about. When there is a dramatic change to a family structure, it could result in a change in residency, schooling, financial distress, or it could mean that the goals you once had as a family have a decreased chance of being realized.

Join me in this critical conversation about life goals and protections. In the coming weeks, I’ll share how you can benefit from life insurance while you are living.

If you’re ready to learn more about how this can work for you and or your family, please schedule a call and add yourself to my calendar. This conversation is too important not to have.
